Town of Sliven

Sliven is one of the leading towns in Bulgaria in historical, economic and cultural aspect. The town is situated in the beautiful South-Eastern part of Bulgaria below the Blue Stones. It has been among the leading towns for centuries. In the past when Bulgaria was under the occupation of the Turkish Empire, Sliven has been a cradle of the haidouk movement, a synonym of the national irreconcilability with tyranny and slavery.

No other Bulgarian town can pride itself on people like Hadji Dimitar, Panayot Hitov and Dobri Chintolov - staunch patriots who resolutely followed the ideals of struggle and gave inspiration to other Bulgarians to believe in the liberty of the country.

Sliven can be proud also on its First Textile Factory, the first one on the Balkans, built up in 1834 by the inhabitant of Sliven Dobri Zhelyazkov. Zhelyazkov's textile factory puts the beginning of Bulgarian industry, a tradition that has been kept till today.

Sliven has 106 000 inhabitants and it is the eight biggest town in the country. The town is ecologically clean and has a well-formed infrastructure. A great number of things is produced in Sliven, both for home and the foreign market, such as woolen materials, carpets, flooring, electric bulbs, glass and crystal appliances, starters, generators and other parts of the furnishing of cars, special electric motors, machine tools, socks, knitted wear. The town is very famous with the wine and peaches production too - one of the greatest grape vines and peaches valleys are growing in this region.
Sliven is interesting and attractive place for the tourists. It is situated at the foot of the mountain and the Blue Stones with their irresistible alpine charm are the eternal scenery above the town. The Blue Stones are part of the highest eastern part of the Balkan mountain. The Blue Stones park, spread over about 7 000 hectares, is the third biggest park in Bulgaria after the parks of Vitosha and Pirin. One can admire the Blue Stones while traveling by the lift (which takes approximately 20 minutes) or just walking by foot through the many walk paths, which also lead to "Karandila" - the part of the park that is nearest to the town. There are several places there with good conditions for short-time tourism or holiday tourism, with good possibilities for sport throughout all seasons. The mountain near Sliven with its rough terrains and excellent roads is an attractive place for Bulgarian and European motoring. Here is the most interesting part of the rally "Zlatny" which is a part of the European championship.

Another gift of the nature is placed also in Sliven - the mineral water springs. In the spa, which is situated at about 12 km away from the town, there are sanatoriums, restaurants, holiday houses, hotels and regular transport. The mineral water that was used in the remote past as well successfully assists the treatment of stomach and the guts, the gall bladder, the liver, the locomotory system, the peripheral nervous system and others. The capacity and the quality of the mineral water allow for its bottling.
Sliven has always been one of the greatest intellectual centers in Bulgaria. One of the oldest secondary schools in the country is in Sliven - The Maths and Natural Science Secondary School found by Dobri Chintolov in 1850. The education and love of learning in the well-provided schools as well as the cultural activities and cultural clubs have produced fruit in the national treasure house. A great number of writers were born in Sliven. Some of them are among the classics of Bulgarian literature. And it is not only writers who were born in this cultural center but also famous Bulgarian people who gave their contribution in the field of art, science, economy, etc. In the Western Languages Secondary School "Zahari Stoyanov" pupils learn German, French and English. There is a higher institute in Sliven for teachers in the technical subjects, which is a branch of the Technical University in Sofia, an institute for teachers in special subjects, an institute for nurses, a college for managers, dozens of junior schools, primary schools other secondary schools and specialized schools

The cultural life in Sliven has been kept through the centuries and is still alive nowadays. The two companies of actors for children and adults perform in their own modern buildings. The town art gallery preserves one of the best collections outside the capital. There is a philharmonic orchestra, an opera, a chorus school, two big libraries and a number of smaller ones and some cultural clubs. The historical museum preserves and enriches the memory of the town in several sites of national and local importance.
